Mitchells Plains public transport isn’t exactly the embodiment of efficiency, and if you’re travelling on a tight schedule, you should organise your own car. Failing that, you can organise car pool or even brave the local minibus taxis.
This is almost always the fastest way to get in and out of MP, except late at night when a bus is your safest option and services are more regular than trains or taxis.
Metrorail
The Cape Town railway service, Metrorail (0800 656 463/www.capemetrorail.co.za), isn’t exactly predictable, but over the years they have improved their efficientcy. Cable theft and train vandalism has had a direct effect on the timely services Metro rail strives to deliver to locals but expect on time service, one day and hopelessly delayed the next, so relying on this mode of transport if you want to be punctual isn’t a good idea. All in all it will get you from A to B.
The Cape Town Railway Station
The Cape Town Main Railway Station (021 449 2991) in Adderley Street is the centre of all train networks in the Western Cape.
Travel safe
The safest time to travel is between 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm. Minimise unnecessary risks by travelling on the Metro Plus class and keeping all your valuables close at hand and out of sight.
On unique factor about traveling on Cape Town trains are there local traders that make their way through the carriers selling all sorts of goodies such as breath mints, sweets, cold drinks, chips etc.
GA provides a scheduled passenger services in and out of Mitchell’s Plain. Their
services are pretty reliable throughout the year and are deemed the safest means of
transport by many. Very much like the train services, they extend their hours to
23:00 and -00:00 in festive seasons to accommodate staff from major shopping
centres around the city.
Mini Bus Taxi systems in Mitchell's Plain
This no doubt the most easily accessible means of public transport to and from Mitchells plain, from almost anywhere in the city. It’s an industry that is regulated but at times one would question that. Either way, if you’re looking to get to your destination fast, and at the cheapest price, these modes of transport will be your best bet. A negative factor about taxi’s can be that if you’re required to change routes it would mean having to spend money on the new route. Whereas the train you’re able to change train routes with the same ticket to get you to your destination.
The N2 Express service provides a regular, reliable, affordable and convenient service for commuters travelling to the Cape Town CBD. The buses will travel into town and dock at the Civic Centre station, where passengers can transfer to other areas serviced by MyCiTi buses, or connect to other parts of Cape Town via the nearby rail station.
The proposed route starts at the Mitchells Plain Town Centre, runs along AZ Berman Drive,
right onto the R300 and then left onto the N2 Bus-Minibus-Taxi (BMT) lane towards Cape
Town via Hospital Bend.
A second proposed route starts at the Mitchells Plain Town Centre and runs via Wespoort,
Eisleben and Morgenster Drive towards Vanguard Drive and into the Cape Town CBD. The
details of this route are still being reviewed.
