Fatima Chohan, having had a distinguished career as a Member of Parliament, was appointed by President Jacob Zuma as Deputy Minister of Home Affairs on 1 November 2010..

The new card was launched on 18 July – the 95th birthday of Nelson Mandela, with Mandela himself being one of the first to receive his smart ID card.
