OUR FAVOURITE RED CARPET LOOKS FROM THE 2014 EMMY AWARDS

THE Emmy Awards is the Oscars of the television world - a night when

America's

small screen stars take the focus from their big screen counterparts.

Ensuring there was plenty of drama on the red carpet for 2014, this

year's best dressed eschewed the sartorial safety of the black gown

and embraced vibrant reds, pinks and coral.

Leading the pack was January Jones in scarlet Prabal Gurung, while

Claire Danes wore fire engine-red Givenchy andChristina Hendricks

chose ruby Marchesa. At the rosier end of the colour spectrum, Zooey

Deschanel chose magenta Oscar de la Renta, Julie Louis-Dreyfus was

in crimson Carolina Herrera and Lena Dunham wore a rainbow of pink

hues in her cascading Giambattista Valli Couture.

White gowns also enjoyed a red carpet renaissance, courtesy of

Kate Mara, Michelle Monaghan, Lucy Liu, Sofia Vergara and Camila

Alves - all of whom could have been walking down the aisle, rather

than the red carpet, in their floor-length designs.

Outside of the red carpet, the men’s fashion scene won full upswing with strong menswear collections, men’s-only stores and the peacocking phenomenon. The red carpet seemed slow on picking up on the menswear bandwagon. Its truly amazing how many times one can reinvent a tuxedo but still this year saw enough talented menswear designers who could surely do a handsome job at tailoring a modern tuxedo.

Theres no doubt you can’t quite beat a man in a classic tuxedo when done impeccably. Matt Bomer and Jon Hamm with your sharp black tie outfits. Ideals of sartorial elegance we should all aspire to.

But there’s something refreshing in the blue tux of Ty Burrell from Todd Snyder and in the navy tuxedo with black lapels of Seth Meyers from Valentino. On stage he wore a Ralph Lauren Black Label navy tuxedo. Also in a blue tuxedo was Matthew McConaughey — a three-piece look from Dolce & Gabbana.

Jim Parsons also moved away from black. He chose a brown shawl collar tuxedo from Giorgio Armani, which was unexpected but didn’t have quite the appeal of those worn by Burrell and Meyers.

Adam Levine, true to his rock star persona, killed in a modern peak lapel tuxedo worn with white-on-white shirt and tie. And with a Victoria Secret model as a date, who can you sartorially fail?
